Haiti Babi was created to keep kids out of orphanages and with their parents.
What does it take to keep kids out of orphanages and with their parents? A simple solution: jobs. So Haiti Babi was born.
Haiti Babi hires moms in Haiti to knit and crochet high-quality artisan baby goods. A job empowers these moms to earn a living while caring for their families. By purchasing a Haiti Babi product you empower a mom in Haiti to care for her children and keep them out of orphanages.
A trip to Haiti with my mom was the start of the Haiti Babi story. In Haiti, my mom and I volunteered at an orphanage, and I fell in love with a one-year-old boy named Sterly.
As with many of the other children there, Sterly's parents could not afford a house, food, or simple medical care to keep him alive, so an orphanage was the only solution. Sadly, Sterly's story is not uncommon in Haiti. One in ten children lives in an orphanage, yet 80% of those children have living parents.
On my second trip to Haiti a few months later, Sterly was reunited with his family and I got to visit him at their home. I was able to experience firsthand the love of Sterly's family and realized that no parent should have to be without their child simply because they can't afford him. That day I was inspired to give these families a hand up, not a hand out, by a sustainable solution to this common problem in Haiti.
Haiti Babi's mission is to create jobs for moms. Every mom should have the opportunity to care for her child. Please join me in making this a reality. Let's give moms jobs, keep familes together, and end the cycle of extreme poverty.
